Fixing a Drywall Crack!
Cracks in drywall are a common occurrence in old homes as well as buildings recently constructed. Although some are typical, there are also brand new cracks which are not usually what homeowners expect. The problem may be minor, such as improperly installing joint tape at the time of board hanging. Or, the drywall is shrinking due to the humidity levels. Regardless, cracks in walls can signify structural problems that require a drywall repair immediately.
Step 1: Use a utility knife to enlarge the crack slightly, allowing for more surface area to which the joint compound can more easily stick. Once the gap has been widened, fill it well with a combined mixture.
Step 2: Cut a piece of tape, about an inch longer than the length of the crack, and embed it entirely in the compound over the gap, using a taping knife to spread the mixture reasonably on the surface.
Step 3: Once this first coat of joint compound has dried, do some light sanding, followed by a second, lighter coat of mixture. When applying the second coat, extending about six inches out on both sides from where the first coat was left off is essential. After drying, lightly sand once more and apply a third coat of joint compound. The third coat should be even lighter than the second and extend further than where the crack used to be.
Step 4: When your third coat has completely dried, it’s time to sand with a fine-grit sanding block, carefully sand the edges, and run your hand over the patch to ensure it is completely smooth. It’s impossible to overemphasize the importance of getting the patch flawless before applying primer and paint. So, look at the wall before reaching for your paintbrush and roller.
