Hanging Drywall on a Ceiling
If you have ever taken the time to watch a skilled drywall service specialist, you admire how fast and effortless it seems to be for them. Some even use nothing more than a tape measure and a utility knife to make all the required cut-outs. For a normal homeowner who may want to save a few dollars on a home construction project via DIY, hanging drywall can be very intimidating; actual physical labor is involved here. Hanging drywall can be done with a bit of patience and instruction.
The first thing we need to do is look at the ceiling and see where any cut-outs need to be made.
Let’s say our first board has two recessed lights. Make two measurements. One from the wall in a straight line to the center of the light on the long side of the drywall. Another one for the wall on a straight line to the center of the light on the width side of the drywall. Transfer these measurements onto your drywall. Where the two sizes intersect will be the center of your recessed light. Next, measure the diameter of the lighting feature. Use this measurement to draw a circle equal in distance from your center point. Once you have these, you can create a layout on how to hang your drywall.
The second thing is to hang the drywall board.
Use a caulking gun to line all the ceiling joists with adhesive where you place the board. If you have a drywall lift, put the board on it and raise it into place. The lift will hold it there so you can start securing it with drywall screws. If you don’t have a lift, we recommend having an assistant do the ceiling. A neat little device that you can make is a “T” out of 2×4s to help support the drywall board while you start fastening with screws. Using a cordless drill, attach panels to all joists with screws. Stick the drywall board around the perimeter of the ceiling.
The third thing is to paint.
Painting a ceiling is laborious and may require some newspaper. Since you’ve hung the drywall on your ceiling, have newspapers on the floor so dripping paint won’t stain. Use rollers for extensive reach and ease of painting.
